YOU

Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) commissioned us to make this film celebrating young people's voices across Swansea Bay through creative workshops fostering wellbeing, belonging and agency. This project was produced as part of Welsh Government’s Child Poverty Innovation Supporting Communities Grant Funding initiative.

The aim was not to communicate or explain the project as such but to make a film embedded within the project which foregrounded the activity and spirit of the young people participating. With this in mind we opted to omit the usual talking heads interviews to avoid having adult 'experts' talking about young people and their situation. We wanted to steer clear of any stereotypes or stigma attached to young people being educated in communities identified by Welsh Government as 'deprived' or notions of 'child poverty'. Using the documentary techniques of 'Cinema Verite' (direct or truth cinema) we embedded ourselves into the creative workshops to allow authentic moments of making, reflection and transformation to reveal themselves and for a narrative to emerge which was authentic to the experience and expression of the young people involved.
