Beyond Words

Using material (physical sensation) intense emotion, (using objects phenomenologically) and repeated involuntary movement (methods of making), Can arts practice can bridge disconnection and connection in order to improving ones well being?. For this research project my aim was to apply art making to explore the intrusion of medical objects and their procedures to express my trauma felt as a mother and an artist of a child going through Leukaemia treatment. I wanted to apply this in the form of a film to take the viewer on a visceral journey using artwork installation and incorporating it into an audio visual narrative. I aimed to take a phenomenological approach.  Phenomenology theory states that ‘the objects we perceive…exist, in the way that they exist, through the meanings that each of us gives them’ (Spinelli, E 2005). Alongside this I also wanted to explore my intuition through haptic perception, the perception of touch. Elbrecht, Cornelia (2013) states in her book Trauma Healing at the clay field, talks about haptic object relations through the skin sense in relation to phenomenology 

‘This process should not be interrupted through introducing meaning. Rather the rhythmic exploration of substance and space should be encouraged as the basis for dealings with the physical world’ (pg62)

These two theories, phenomenology and haptic perception were a key starting point I wanted to adopt when starting this project. I hoped to explore this through sensory experience with medical objects, materials, environments and exploring different methods of making that could become metaphors for my feelings and emotions.

Exploring my trauma felt as a mother of a child going through Leukaemia treatment. The film takes the viewer on a visceral journey using artwork installation and incorporating it into an audio visual narrative. The film aims to evoke a phenomenology of objects used in medical procedures and track my psychological journey from safe connection to disconnection.
